Excerpts from The Splash Family:
Mychal Thompson on former Warriors head coach Mark Jackson declaring Stephen and Klay “the greatest shooting backcourt in the history of the game”: “When he (Klay) was drafted by the Warriors, I told him, I said, ‘You and Steph are going to be the greatest shooting backcourt in history.’ Now I didn’t have the guts to say that publicly, Mark (Jackson) did, but Klay knows. I’ve told him that privately the day he got drafted. I said, ‘You two are going to go down as the greatest shooting backcourt in history.’”
Stephen Curry on playing with Klay Thompson: “The way that we play together and work off each other, we want to be talked about as great shooters individually and guys that did it together.”
Klay Thompson on playing with Stephen Curry: “I haven’t been on a team where someone shoots it better than me, you know? And just as much (as me)… for a long time. I can just sit and watch a lot, it’s amazing, the rhythm he (Stephen) gets in is crazy. It motivates me; when I get to that level, we’re dangerous.”
Dell Curry on Stephen and Klay’s work ethic: “Mychal and I know how hard it was to get there and sustain our careers. To see our kids do it as well, knowing that they did it on their own… Of course they saw how to do it, but you have to go out and do it. They’re not going to listen to us say ‘It’s time to go to the gym, go work out.’ You have to be able to do that on your own, so to have the work ethic and the dedication to want to follow in their fathers’ footsteps, I think it’s amazing.”
Mychal Thompson on Stephen and Klay: “They put the work in and have the respect of the game to work the way that they do, and that’s what I admire about these two guys, they’re true professionals. Not only are they talented – they’re gifted, no question about it – but you’ve got a lot of gifted guys who have come through this league, but they don’t put the time in or respect the game or the opportunity like these two gentlemen do.”
Stephen Curry on advice that kids aspiring to be pro athletes should listen to their parents: “You’ve got to take that wisdom, challenge yourself to make yourself better, because they really do care, love, and support you. That’s something as a father that I can kind of see… Hear them out, see how you can make yourself better, and keep working.”
Dell Curry on pro athletes spending time away from their families: “Until you live it, you can only guess and imagine what it’s like, but until you live it you don’t see how tough and strenuous it is on your family.”
Mychal Thompson on advice he’s shared with Klay: “I just tell my boys, ‘Appreciate what you have, don’t take it for granted. You’ve been blessed with a healthy body and the skills to be able to play a sport, so make sure that you bleed everything that you can out of this so that when you’re 38 or 40 years of age, you don’t have any regrets when you retire.’”
Dell Curry on advice he’s shared with Stephen: “It’s a small window. It may seem like the year is long or the season is long, but when you’re out and you look back, you go ‘Wow, that went by so fast.’ So enjoy your time, make great friends that you’re going to have the rest of your life, and make sure you keep your family in check as well.”
Dell Curry on advice for parents of aspiring athletes: “Just make sure they have fun. Don’t push them, because a lot of times you’ll push them too far and you’ll push them away. Don’t try to live through them. You’ve already had your fun; just make sure that you’re there as a supporter for whatever they want to do.”
