SAN JOSE -- The San Jose Sharks signed forward Melker Karlsson to a one-year contract, GM Doug Wilson announced on Friday.
Karlsson, 23, recorded 25 points (9-16=25) and 14 penalty minutes in 48 games with Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2013-14. He finished the season ranked T-7th on the team in points, 3rd in faceoff percentage (52.8%), T-5th in assists and 8th in goals as Skelleftea AIK finished with the best regular-season record in the league (111 points) for the second straight season.
Karlsson registered 12 points (4-8=12) in 14 playoff games, ranking 6th in the SHL in playoff scoring, 4th in plus/minus (plus-9) and 3rd amongst league forwards in blocked shots(16) as Skelleftea AIK won its second consecutive SHL Championship.
The six-foot-one, 181-pound forward posted career highs in points (28), goals (13) and plus/minus (plus-20) in 2012-13, and has reached the SHL Final with Skelleftea AIK in each of the past four seasons (2011-2014), helping the team win the last two championships (2013, 2014). In 216 career SHL games, all with Skelleftea AIK, Karlsson has tallied 66 points (31-35=66) and 46 penalty minutes. The native of Lycksele, Sweden, has posted 32 points (9-23=32) in 71 career playoff games.
Karlsson has played with fellow Sharks prospect Petter Emanuelsson at Skelleftea AIK for parts of the last five seasons (2009-10 through 2013-14).
