SAN JOSE -- One of the strangest offseasons in recent memory is over, as the San Jose Sharks are set to open their 2014 training camp at Sharks Ice on Friday.
Of the 51 players in camp, 31 are forwards, 14 are defenseman and six are goalies. Nearly all of the players expected to make a push for the opening night roster were in the Sharks' organization last season, despite suggestions of significant change from management following the team's first round collapse against Los Angeles.
For the first week of camp the Sharks will be split up into two groups, with the on-ice sessions open to the public. On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21, the two sides will scrimmage at 9:50 a.m. on the South Rink, with seating limited to the first 250 guests in line.
The Sharks have a seven-game preseason slate, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when they play a split-squad game with the Canucks. Half of the club will play at Stockton Arena, home of the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder, while the other half will be at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
The Sharks have three home preseason games at SAP Center on Sept. 26 vs. Arizona, Sept. 27 vs. Anaheim and Sept. 30 against the Kings. A Fan Fest at SAP Center will take place beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 27, culminating with the game against the Ducks that night.
San Jose opens its 23rd NHL regular season on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles.
