The NHL Players' Association agreed to a conference and divisional realignment, which would be put into effect at the start of the 2013-14 season, NHL Deputy Commisioner Bill Daly announced Thursday.

The realignment is pending an approval from the NHL Board of Governors.

"The NHL Players' Association confirmed to us today that it has consented to a revised Plan for Realignment, effective for the 2013-14 season," Daly said in a press release. "Our next step will be to bring the proposed Plan for Realignment to the NHL Board of Governors for its consideration. We will update the status of the process as future developments warrant."

Should the realignment be approved it would feature a two-conference, four-division set-up, grouping teams that are geographical close together. It would replace the two-conference, six-division system that has been in effect since the 1998-99 season.
