In the preseason opener for both the Sharks and Canucks, Adam Cracknell scored in 3-on-3 overtime to give Vancouver a 1-0 win over San Jose in North Saanich, British Columbia on Monday night.
Working with plenty of space thanks to the new overtime rules, Cracknell walked to the slot and whipped a wrist shot past Aaron Dell after three scoreless periods.
The Sharks used a very young lineup for the game, head coach Pete DeBoer’s first behind the San Jose bench. Among NHL regulars were Tomas Hertl, Chris Tierney, Tommy Wingels, Matt Nieto, Ben Smith, Barclay Goodrow, Brenden Dillon and Mike Brown. The remaining San Jose players were a mixture of prospects like former first round picks Timo Meier and Nikolay Goldobin, and several others that will likely return to their junior clubs or join the inaugural AHL Barracuda roster.
Troy Grosenick and Aaron Dell – the likely goaltending duo to start the season with the Barracuda – split time in net.
Each team finished with 19 shots on goal.
The Sharks will remain in British Columbia to play the Canucks again at Rogers Arena on Tuesday night. San Jose will likely ice a more veteran lineup, while the game will feature an automatic 3-on-3 overtime regardless of the score.
The Sharks host the Coyotes on Friday and Ducks on Saturday at SAP Center in preseason action.
