The Raiders placed left tackle Jared Veldheer on injured reserve with a designation to return on Saturday morning.
The team signed tackle Matt McCants off the practice squad in a corresponding move.
Under the short-term IR guidelines, Veldheer can return to practice six weeks after the designation is assigned. He’ll be eligible to play eight weeks after.
The Raiders made the move Friday because their hand was forced. A knee injury to offensive tackle Menelik Watson created an immediate need for depth at a position with no healthy reserves.
The Raiders don’t have to activate Veldheer after six weeks. They can wait until he’s fully recovered from triceps surgery. Recovery time for a partially torn triceps typically lasts three months.
Veldheer was expected back after midseason. He will be eligible to return for the Nov. 3 home game against the Philadelphia Eagles, although he may not be ready by then.
