Defensive end LaMarr Woodley didn’t do much during his first season as a Raider. The veteran edge rusher had just five tackles in six games before his season was cut short by a biceps tear.
Even with a year left on his contract, Woodley won’t get a shot at redemption. An NFL source told CSN reporter Fallon Smith that Woodley will be released this week.
The impending transaction does not come as a surprise. CSN Bay Area previously reported that Woodley has a $1 million roster bonus scheduled for March 14, the fifth day of the new league year. Cutting him was expected.
Releasing Woodley comes without penalty. The Raiders save $5.187 million against the salary cap without adding any dead money with the transaction.
News broke last week that strong safety Tyvon Branch would also be released before the league year begins on March 10 and teams can start signing free agents.
ESPN reports that Branch will be released on Monday.
