The Raiders have been granted permission to interview Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, and Denver Post reporter Mike Klis says it could happen as early as Saturday.
Del Rio is available because the Broncos have a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs.
According to NFL sources, Del Rio has been considered a favorite since the Raiders’ coaching search began, though they didn’t reach out to the Broncos right away.
[BAIR: Raiders' options for next head coach]
Del Rio is a Castro Valley native and a Hayward High graduate. His parents are longtime Raiders fans, and it’s believed that Del Rio covets this job. He was head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for nine seasons, but had just three campaigns where the Jaguars were above .500.
Del Rio spoke to the press on Wednesday, but refused to discuss future opportunities during that session.
The Raiders have already interviewed Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Schurmur. They are expected to interview several other candidates before making a hire.
