The Raiders continue to add lower level assistants to Jack Del Rio’s coaching staff. The latest comes from the college ranks.
Florida State University defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri will be the Raiders linebackers coach, the team announced on Friday morning.
The team also officially announced the hiring of offensive line coach Mike Tice, quarterbacks coach Todd Downing and the re-hiring and promotion of Marcus Robertson to secondary coach.
The aforementioned hires were reported in recent days.
It was known on Thursday that Sunseri was set to join the Raiders staff, but Friday’s announcement provided clarity on which position group he was going to coach.
He has extensive experience coaching linebackers at the college level, especially early in his career. He did so at Pittsburgh (1985-92), Louisville (1995-97), Alabama A&M (1998-99), Michigan State (2001) and Alabama (2009-11)
Sunseri’s only NFL coaching experience came as Carolina Panthers defensive line coach from 2002-08. He went to the college ranks after that, spending three seasons with Alabama, the 2012 season as Tennessee defensive coordinator and two years as Seminoles’ defensive ends coach (2013-14).
Sunseri has worked with Del Rio before. He was linebackers coach in Carolina in 2002, Del Rio’s only season as Panthers defensive coordinator.
