ALAMEDA – Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew was limited in Thursday’s practice, his first formal workout since having had surgery on Sept. 8.
The team hopes to have Jones-Drew available on Sunday against New England, but the major concern is whether his hand can handle the rigors of his position, which includes blocking, receiving and ball security.
“He needs to be able to function in the role of a running back,” head coach Dennis Allen said. “If he can do that without limitation, we’re going to have him up and playing.”
Jones-Drew did some team drills on Thursday, a positive sign but not a sure one that he’ll play at New England. He had extra protection over his recovering hand.
“He got some work in,” Allen said. “We’ll see how he’s doing tomorrow.”
The Raiders have a walk-thru scheduled for Friday, before they leave for the East Coast.
Some other injury notes from Raiders practice:
-- Weakside linebacker Sio Moore missed a second straight practice. That, plus some roster shuffling that paved the way to promote linebacker Bojay Filimoeatu, suggests that Moore might not be ready to play by Sunday.
-- Cornerback Carlos Rogers was limited after missing Wednesday’s practice with a knee strain, though the Raiders seem optimistic that he’ll be ready to play.
-- Receiver Rod Streater (hip) did not participate but remains confident he’ll play.
