ALAMEDA – There was virtually no chance of cornerback DJ Hayden being activated in time to play the Arizona Cardinals. He had to work himself back into football shape.
Raiders interim head coach Tony Sparano said there is “a possibility” that he’ll be ready to play on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. The Raiders have a 21-day period to evaluate Hayden in practice before activating him off the physically unable to perform list. That window closes in two weeks.
“As far as needing the whole window, we’re taking it day by day with DJ,” Sparano said. “He had a good day today actually. He took some reps out there today. Last week was really limited to mostly scout team work. This week he took a few reps in there with the defense.”
He had the opportunity to take some defensive team reps in the week’s only padded practice with Carlos Rogers out with a knee injury. That was a step up from last week’s work and a sign that he’s getting closer to a return.
Some other Raiders injury notes:
-- Little used tight end David Ausberry has a foot injury. Sparano said it could be serious, though time will paint a clearer picture.
-- Sparano said it was his decision to hold Rogers out of practice.
-- Defensive end Justin Tuck and fullback Marcel Reece were limited after missing last week’s game.
-- Guard Austin Howard was added to the participation report. He was limited with a neck injury.
