ALAMEDA –- TJ Carrie crumpled to the FirstEnergy Stadium turf, writhing in pain.
The Raiders rookie cornerback grabbed the left side of his lower back late in Sunday’s loss to the Browns, an image that didn’t bode well for his future playing prospects.
The feeling wasn’t positive either.
“It was a big scare,” Carrie said. “Back problems can be pretty serious. You see them take guys down.”
Turns out it was just a spasm. Carrie has no lingering effects from Sunday, and was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.
That’s a good thing for the Raiders, who have found a reliable cornerback in the rookie seventh-round pick. While he has rookie moments, it’s clear that Carrie belongs at this level. He’s played cornerback in the nickel package, which allows the Raiders to bring DJ Hayden along slowly in his return from a fractured foot.
“The coaches have done a good job of bringing me along and teaching me the NFL game,” Carrie said. “I have a lot to learn, but I feel confident in what I’m doing out there.”
Some other injury notes from Raiders practice:
-- Interim head coach Tony Sparano said he’ll have to management the practice efforts of fullback Marcel Reece (quadriceps) and defensive end Justin Tuck (knee). Both players have been limited in recent weeks to give them the rest required to make contributions on game day.
“I’ve had kept them limited,” Sparano said. “There are some things we need to have them participate in, and other moments they can skip. That’s how we’ll manage things for the time being.”
-- Carlos Rogers (knee) missed his second straight Wednesday practice with a knee injury, which could be another management decision for a veteran who doesn’t need much practice time.
-- The Raiders signed Larry Asante, who will add depth at safety after Usama Young was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a knee injury. He should backup both positions and provide special teams help.
-- Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa missed Wednesday’s practice with a hamstring strain suffered on Sunday against Cleveland.
