ALAMEDA –- Raiders safety Charles Woodson was limited again in Friday’s walk-thru practice and is considered questionable on the official injury report heading into Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
No shocker there.
Woodson is trying to play a week after dislocating his right shoulder against the Cincinnati Bengals, no easy task for a hard-hitting safety. He has campaigned to play and head coach Jack Del Rio appreciates the effort, but remains unsure of Woodson’s playing status heading into Week 2.
“We’ll just see how it goes,” Del Rio said. “We have him as questionable. He’s been fighting his way back all week. He’s really trying hard to make it. We’ll finish that evaluation as we get closer to the game.”
The Raiders have some options. They can rest him a week or two to strengthen the shoulder in hopes that helps him stay healthy in future games. They can activate him in a limited role, or have him play significant snaps alongside free safety Larry Asante.
“A lot of things are possible right now,” Del Rio said. “I know you guys want to know, but you’re just going to have to watch on Sunday. Because as much as you want to know, so does Baltimore. We rather bring our best on Sunday and not tell them all about it.”
If Woodson is inactive, Taylor Mays is expected to start at strong safety. The Raiders also have an extra roster spot, which would likely go to practice squad player Tevin McDonald should Woodson be sidelined.
“Let’s see how it shakes out with Charles first and then the domino effect after that,” Del Rio said.
-- Right tackles Austin Howard was fined $8,681 for unnecessary roughness against the Cincinnati Bengals. Howard was protecting receiver Amari Cooper, who had his head shoved into his helmet by Bengals cornerback Adam Jones.
-- The Raiders have three players out, including defensive tackle Justin Ellis (ankle). Expect to see Stacy McGee and C.J. Wilson fill in for Ellis in the base defense.
-- Running back Roy Helu should be active on Sunday with Jamize Olwale out. He was a healthy scratch against the Bengals.
