OAKLAND – Raiders middle linebacker Nick Roach hasn’t been able to pass the final stage of the NFL’s concussion-related protocol. He tried again on Saturday and, for the second straight week, Roach was not cleared for contact.
He was ruled inactive for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans at O.co Coliseum. Miles Burris will start another game in Roach’s stead.
Losing Roach is a major blow. He’s the defensive field general, calling plays, making checks and helping put teammates in position to make plays.
Burris had an uneven performance in a difficult spot. He spent training camp and the preseason focused on the weakside linebacker spot.
The Raiders received some secondary help, with Chimdi Chekwa active and ready to resume his role as No. 3 cornerback. He missed last week’s game recovering from a knee strain. .
As expected, running back Maurice Jones-Drew will miss Sunday’s game after having a broken hand surgically repaired. Darren McFadden and Latavius Murray will lead the ground game.
Quarterback Matt McGloin, safety Jonathan Dowling, guard Tony Bergstrom, defensive end Shelby Harris and tackle Matt McCants were also ruled inactive.
