ALAMEDA -- Owner Mark Davis said on Friday that the Raiders are close to signing a one-year lease to play at O.co Coliseum in the 2015 season.
Davis said last year that he didn’t want to sign one short-term lease after another, but it’s become a necessary evil this year without another place to play.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said late in 2014 that no team would move to Los Angeles in the 2015 season. And the Raiders want to stay in the East Bay and remain committed to building a new, state-of-the-art football stadium in this region.
The one-year lease allows the Raiders to continue working on a long-term solution while keeping their options open.
“I don’t believe we’ve signed it yet, but we’ve agreed to terms on the deal,” Davis said after Jack Del Rio’s introductory press conference. “The plan is to be here next year.”
The agreement must be approved by a few entities before becoming official, but there’s nothing expected to impede the agreement’s progress.
Davis hopes it will be prelude to a longer-term solution despite the fact that there’s been little progress in talks with the city of Oakland in regards to a new football stadium.
“We’re working hard to stay here,” Davis said. “We’re not using any other city as leverage. It’s not that way. It’s known that, no matter what we do here, it will not be as valuable as if we went somewhere else. That’s known. But we still want to be here. Finances are not the No. 1 goal of this organization. I’ll say that right now.”
Davis said it’s possible that he’ll have to sign another short-term lease again next year, but he’s like to avoid it.
“We are trying to get something done here,” Davis said. “I’d like to build something permanent for this franchise.”
