Rodney Hudson didn’t offer many specifics about his first go-round as a free agent.
That’s fair. The new Raiders center and the current prize of this free agent didn’t spend much time in limbo.
Technically speaking, the former Kansas City Chief committed to the Raiders before the free agency period opened on Tuesday. There was a day or so between the start of the negotiating period and the Raiders giving a five-year, $44.5 million offer Hudson couldn’t refuse.
“It happened so fast, it’s tough to remember everything that happened,” Hudson said on Wednesday in a conference call. “I am excited to be here. I’m excited for the opportunity.”
He didn’t discuss other teams interested or the reasoning behind the Raiders choice. The guy’s already focused on football.
Hudson seems ready for the pressure and leadership responsibility that comes with a big-money contract.
I think I need to be a leader, especially as a center,” Hudson said. “It comes with the position. I’ve assumed a leadership role in previous years, and I’m looking forward to be that guy again here. I can’t wait to get together with the guys and start growing as a unit.”
Hudson will lead an offensive line that must be in pretty good shape to run new coordinator Bill Musgrave’s up-tempo offense. Analysts have said Hudson is a solid fit for that scheme, both as an athlete and an organizer of men.
“I think it’s going to be a good fit,” Hudson said. “I’m excited to learn the system and go out there an execute it.”
Hudson he’s excited to play in front of Raiders fans and with quarterback Derek Carr.
“He’s a smart kid,” Hudson said. “It’s going to be fun working with him.”
