The Raiders signed rookie defensive end Sam Montgomery to their practice squad on Tuesday evening.
The 2013 third-round pick was cut by the Houston Texans on Oct. 12 for violating team rules and spend most of the season as a free agent. Montgomery hasn’t played in a game, and was the highest draft pick cut during his rookie season.
He was a participant in Wednesday’s practice.
The Raiders are taking a low-risk flyer on Montgomery, a 2011 All-American from Louisiana State. Montgomery reportedly reported to rookie minicamp out of shape and suffered an injury that limited his offseason work. He also started training camp on the non-football injury list. He was inactive for the season’s first seven games before getting cut.
The Raiders had interest in Montgomery earlier in the season and didn’t offer a contract. They felt better after a workout on Tuesday, although he won’t have a real chance to contribute until next season.
