INDIANAPOLIS – Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie’s 2014 draft class has been lauded for its depth of talent. That group includes five projected starters from eight picks, three of which came in the seventh round.
That’s an impressive haul. The Raiders could use a repeat performance as they continue to build through the NFL draft. McKenzie has a selection in all seven rounds, and he’s evaluating talent extensively during this week’s NFL scouting combine.
He certainly hopes to hit a home run this year, especially with the No. 4 overall selection. It’ll be tough to top a 2014 class that includes linebacker Khalil Mack, quarterback Derek Carr, guard Gabe Jackson, defensive tackle Justin Ellis and cornerback TJ Carrie.
That group played relatively well last year, but McKenzie believes that class still has untapped potential.
“They just scratched the surface, to be honest with you,” McKenzie said. “But I am pleased on not just production, I’m just pleased with the way those guys have shown the way they went about their business because you knew they were going to be good players because they had the right attitude. They wanted to be good. They wanted to be out there and they practiced like it. You see guys like that from a mental standpoint, you go back game-by-game, they weren’t the guys making a whole bunch of mistakes.”
