Jack Del Rio is a name you’ve heard before. The Raiders new head coach has been an NFL coach for a long time now, but he’s done a lot more than stand on the sidelines. That’s especially true in the Bay Area.
Del Rio was born in Castro Valley, was a three-sport star at Hayward High and played 11 seasons in the NFL before his latest career path led him back home.
Let’s take a quick look at some fast facts about the man recently hired by the Silver and Black.
JACK DEL RIO
Born: April 4, 1963 in Castro Valley
High school: Hayward High, where he played football, basketball and baseball. His teams won seven CIF section titles.
Baseball options: He was drafted in the 22nd round of the 1981 MLB amateur baseball draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He turned down the opportunity to go to college.
College days: Del Rio was a star football and baseball player at Southern California. He was a four-year starting linebacker on the football team, and was a consensus All-American during his senior season. He was co-MVP of the 1985 Rose Bowl. All told, he had 340 tackles and 58 tackles for loss.
Draft day: Del Rio was selected in the third round of the 1985 draft by the New Orleans Saints.
NFL career: He played 11 seasons in the NFL, highlighted by a 1994 season where he was named an All-Pro and was elected to the Pro Bowl. He had 1,078 tackles, 12 sacks and 13 interceptions in his career.
He played for the Saints (1985-86), Kansas City Chiefs (1987-88), Dallas Cowboys (1989-91) and Minnesota Vikings (1992-95).
Different path: Del Rio had thoughts of another career. He passed an exam to a become in licensed financial planner. He worked in that field during some offseasons, but eventually decided to get into coaching.
Coaching career: Del Rio has been an NFL coach since the 1997 season. He started off as strength and conditioning coach of the New Orleans Saints. Here’s the rest of his coaching resume:

Next generation: Del Rio’s son is a quarterback at Oregon State. Jack and wife Linda also have three daughters, named Lauren, Hope and Aubrey.
