ALAMEDA –Mike McCoy and Dennis Allen are good friends. They worked together as coordinators on Denver’s staff. Their families vacation together. The head coaches talk year round, save recent meetings between the Raiders and San Diego Chargers.
This week, there is no conflict. The Raiders fired head coach Dennis Allen last week following an 0-4 start.
McCoy will lead the Chargers against interim head coach Tony Sparano during Sunday’s game at O.co Coliseum.
McCoy is certainly disappointed that his friend was let go, but understands the nature of the coaching industry.
“That’s all part of the business,” McCoy said on Wednesday in a conference call. “We’re doing our own thing here in San Diego. We all understand that when we get into it. It’s part of the process.”
While Allen is under contract through the 2015 season, the next stage will be getting back with an NFL team. Allen spent one year as Broncos defensive coordinator under John Fox and five seasons as a position coach under Sean Peyton in New Orleans and four years in Atlanta under Dan Reeves and Jim Mora, Jr.
He has powerful friends in several NFL spots, and many believe Allen will land on his feet. Count McCoy among them.
“Dennis,” McCoy said, “will be fine.”
