Cal football player Ted Agu died on Friday morning, collapsing after participating in a training run with his teammates.
Agu, 21, was a defensive lineman for Cal who walked-on last season. The reason for his death was not disclosed in a statement released by the school.
The team’s doctor said Agu showed signs of fatigue during a training run. He was eventually transferred to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center where he was treated with a defibrillator before being pronounced dead.
“This is a very difficult time for our football family,” head football coach Sonny Dykes said in a statement. “Ted was a remarkable young man and a member of this family who was highly respected and loved by his teammates and coaching staff. He had an incredible passion for life and will be deeply missed.”
