Contract status: Under contract through 2016-17, Collison was signed as a free agent on July 12, 2014.
2013-14 in review: Collison toiled under Doc Rivers in a backup point guard role behind Chris Paul for the Clippers, who lost in the Western Conference semifinals to Oklahoma City in six games.
Primarily due to injury to Paul, Collison started 35 games and led the Clippers to a 26-9 record.
Collison posted a 2.25 assist-to-turnover ratio while Paul had the best ratio in the NBA at 4.57.
Collison averaged 11.4 points per game, shooting 46-percent from the floor and 37-percent from 3-point range. He chipped in with 3.7 assists per game in 80 games while averaging just under 26 minutes per game.
The five-year veteran scored in double figures in five playoff games. He endured the Donald Sterling controversy along with Ryan Hollins who is now a teammate in Sacramento.
2014-15 outlook: Collison, likely the starting point guard in Sacramento, will be looked upon to leverage the Kings’ assets: DeMarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore, Nik Stauskas, et al to get the offense to percolate and gel.
The Kings were last in the NBA in assists last season but their early offensive numbers have improved- they ranked tenth in the NBA in the exhibition season in points scored, second in three point field goal percentage and third in overall field goal percentage.
If the development of McLemore and/or Stauskas stalls, or matchups present themselves advantageous to Sacramento, coach Michael Malone will not hesitate to have Collison and fellow veteran point guard Ramon Sessions on the floor at the same time.
This combination will help the Kings improve at “winning time,” critical junctures of games when the outcome is determined. Sacramento lost 16 games last season by six points (two possessions) or less.
Collison needs to be a provocateur improving Sacramento’s offensive pace, ball movement and “attacking the clock,” getting the ball over half court in 21 seconds with the idea of exploring early scoring opportunities.
