The Kings blew a 26-point lead over the Grizzlies and suffered a 111-110 loss at the buzzer, which was shrouded in controversy.
With Sacramento leading 110-109 with 0.3 seconds to go, Vince Carter’s in-bound pass that may have been tipped by Ryan Hollins resulted in a game winning alley-oop layup for Courtney Lee, pushing Memphis to 8-1 on the season.
Rudy Gay led Sacramento with 25 points while DeMarcus Cousins added 22. Darren Collison 20 and Ben McLemore chipped in with 17 points.
The Kings led the entire night until Michael Conley’s 3-pointer with 10.7 seconds to go gave Memphis its first lead at 109-108.
Cousins was then fouled on a drive to the basket by Marc Gasol and made both free throws with 6.5 seconds to go, giving the Kings the lead, 110-109.
The Kings got a stop after a Zach Randolph jumper missed and McLemore was fouled securing the defensive rebound with 0.6 seconds to go.
However, McLemore missed both free throws and Randolph corralled the rebound and called timeout with 0.3 seconds left, leading to a wild final possession.
It was déjà vu all over again for Sacramento, which jumped out to an early lead over another road opponent in the first quarter -- this time in Memphis where they built a 38-16 lead after the first 12 minutes.
Similar to Dallas when the Kings ascended to a 32-14 lead after the first stanza and led by as many as 24 points, Sacramento could not close the deal on Tuesday, losing 106-98.
Cousins and Gay combined for 25 of the 38 first quarter points on Thursday, but Sacramento’s defensive inconsistency reared its ugly head again as Memphis went for 30 points in the second and third quarters and 35 points in the final twelve minutes.
Conley led Memphis with 22 points and Gasol contributed 20 points in the Grizzlies victory.
With this loss, Sacramento falls to 5-4 on the season and 1-3 on its four-game road trip.
Michael Conley had 22 points and 11 assists, plus his 3-pointer with 10.7 seconds, giving Memphis its first lead of the game at 109-108.
Somehow, the turning point in this game came with less than a second left on the clock when Carter’s in-bound pass with 0.3 seconds to go gave the Grizzlies the win at the buzzer.
For Sacramento: G Darren Collison (sore left shoulder) started and played.
For Memphis: G Raymond Felton (sprained right ankle sprain) did not play.
