SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Williams had plenty of time during an overnight, cross-country flight to replay the decision he made in the top of the ninth Saturday at Nationals Park.
Most outside observers were criticizing the rookie manager for pulling Jordan Zimmermann one out away from a shutout win in Game 2 of the NLCS and summoning closer Drew Storen, who proceeded to blow the save that ultimately led to the Giants' 2-1, 18-inning victory.
Williams understands the criticism. He's his own worst critic. And he admitted as much Sunday afternoon, once the dust had settled.
"Anytime you make a decision on something and it doesn't work, you kick yourself," he said prior to the Nationals' optional workout at AT&T Park. "I kicked myself all night. That's human nature. But we also have a reason for that move."
