PITTSBURGH – More than a decade ago, Buster Posey already knew that Andrew McCutchen was a talented center fielder. McCutchen couldn’t say the same about Posey’s bat or skills behind the plate.
That’s because, when they were teenage teammates on an U.S. Junior National Team roster that toured Taiwan, Posey was one of the club’s top starting pitchers.
“I think I started three or four games,” said Posey, who recalled that Pirates first baseman Ike Davis was on that team, too. “You could tell they were extremely talented. You wouldn’t have thought that 10 or 11 years later, we’d be where we are. It’s definitely fun to look at now.”
Posey won the NL MVP award in 2012. McCutchen won it last year. So it’s all too easy to boil down the buildup to these two players as they approach Wednesday’s NL wild card elimination game between the Giants and Pirates.
Posey remembered missing the start of his senior year of high school to play in the international tournament against the likes of South Korea and Cuba.
He remembered one other detail: The U.S. didn’t win the championship.
