DENVER — Jake Peavy enjoyed watching Jeff Samardzija carve up the Rockies on Tuesday night. The approach didn’t work out quite as well a day later.
Peavy tried to be just as aggressive with a tough Rockies lineup and ended up leaving way too many pitches over the middle of the plate. He became the third pitcher in the last 50 years to give up 10 extra-base hits in a game, and that was a hole even this deep lineup couldn’t dig out of. The Giants lost 10-6, failing to overcome an early deficit for the first time this season.
“The stuff was there — the execution was poor,” Peavy said. “I hate giving this team that kind of hill to climb.”

The Giants got nearly all the way to the top, cutting the deficit to one. Nolan Arenado made sure they rolled right back down to a loss. The Giant-killer of all Giant-killers hit two homers, including a three-run blast in the eighth that gave him a career-high seven RBI and extended the lead to four.
Peavy allowed a two-run homer and RBI double to Arenado. The homer was the only one he gave up, but the double was one of six the Rockies had against Peavy, and there were three triples, too.
“I just didn’t do enough, didn’t make enough quality pitches,” Peavy said. “The execution was poor, poor, poor. I was maybe trying to do a little too much.”
Peavy was particularly steamed about his inability to get off the field with two outs. He gave up a two-out double in each of his four innings. In all, Peavy has now allowed 21 hits in two starts, but he said he’ll find a fix.
“I’m not concerned or panicked or anything at this point,” he said.
Manager Bruce Bochy didn’t seem to be, either. With Sergio Romo headed back to San Francisco, Bochy stuck with Peavy a little longer than expected. It didn’t get all that much better after Peavy departed. The bullpen allowed four runs in four innings, including two extra-base hits. In all the Giants gave up a San Francisco-era record 12 extra-base hits.
“(Peavy) just was missing spots,” Bochy said. “They got (12) extra-base hits. That tells you we made a lot of mistakes tonight. Guys had trouble hitting their spots.”
