Free agent starting pitcher James Shields agreed to a contract with the San Diego Padres, according to multiple reports.
The deal is reportedly in the $75-80 million range over four years.
In a Dec. 20 conference call, Giants general manager Brian Sabean told reporters, "We have specifically talked to Shields."
But in early January, a report surfaced saying San Francisco was no longer involved in the pursuit.
Shields went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA for Kansas City last season, but struggled mightily in the postseason.
He went 1-2 with a 6.12 ERA over five starts, including two losses to the Giants in the World Series.
