The Giants held a private workout with Cuban prospect Yoan Moncada, according to a Baseball America report, and are one of a handful of teams closely monitoring the 19-year-old, switch-hitting infielder prospect.
Teams with deep pockets like the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers are said to be frontrunners for Moncada's talent, as he is expected to fetch big -- potentially record-setting -- money on the international market.
Moncada, 6-foot and 210-pounds, still has hurdles to clear before he can make an impact on an MLB team.
He does not possess enough professional experience to qualify for a major league contract, so whichever team takes the plunge will be required to sign him to a minor league deal.
Giants GM Brian Sabean has voiced his interest in signing a Cuban prospect. Moncada would immediately become the top prospect in the Giants thin farm system.
