SAN FRANCISCO – Buster Posey’s right ring finger remained too sore to play on Thursday and the reigning NL MVP had precautionary X-rays to rule out a fracture.

A team doctor was scheduled to examine Posey before Thursday’s game; results of the X-ray weren’t immediately available.

Posey hurt his finger in the sixth inning Tuesday at San Diego’s Petco Park, when Madison Bumgarner threw a pitch that bounced off the plate and struck the catcher on his bare hand. Half his fingernail was ripped off the nail bed; Hector Sanchez pinch-hit for him in the next inning.

“He’s feeling better,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Posey. “He needs today off, which is fine. We’ll get another start for Hector.”

Sanchez started Wednesday and hit a two-run home run as part of the Giants’ six-homer fest in San Diego.

Posey was just starting to turn a corner after a mostly sluggish second half in which he’s hit just one home run. He was 2 for 3 on Tuesday and has a .412 average over his last nine games, although his streak without a homer is now at 129 at-bats since his last one July 20.

Bochy said he doubted Posey would be available off the bench Thursday, as the club readied to start a seven-game homestand against the Diamondbacks and Rockies.
