SCOTTSDALE -- The position players lined up to sprint around the bases on Saturday morning and at first it seemed a poor idea to put Hunter Pence directly behind George Kottaras, a catcher. When Pence didn't go Full Throttle and get close to or pass Kottaras on the bases it became clear he wasn't feeling 100 percent.
Pence missed the rest of the workout with tendinitis in his right Achilles, but he said it's a "very minor" ailment. The Giants will keep their right fielder off the field for a couple of days just to be sure, and Pence will be reevaluated on Monday.
"If you don't knock it out quickly, it can linger," Pence said. "We don't want it to linger."
Pence said he felt the soreness during the running drill, and when it was over he went straight to trainer Dave Groeschner. He spent the rest of the morning getting looked at and getting treatment, but the Giants don't have any tests planned at the moment. Injuries limited Pence to 52 games last season but no position player has looked sharper early in camp. Pence hit the first homer of the spring a day earlier when he took Johnny Cueto deep to right.
Fellow outfielder Gregor Blanco also missed Saturday's workout. Blanco has been fighting flu-like symptoms for a couple of days and the staff sent him home to rest.
