CHICAGO -- Second baseman Joe Panik (dislocated left pinky finger) took 25 swings in the cage prior to the Giants' series opener in Chicago on Tuesday, and felt good enough to take live batting practice.
Bruce Bochy said he was hopeful Panik would be available off the bench.
Panik said there is still some swelling in the finger, and unlike Marco Scutaro’s pinky injury, this is on his top hand so the finger is more involved in his swing.
“But I can move it,” he said. “It’s purple but (the swelling) is going down. All I need is mobility and that’s getting better.”
He won’t be lopping it off as Ronnie Lott once famously did.
“Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be amputating it. This little pinky is hanging on.”
