On Monday, the Giants announced they extended non-roster invitations for Major League spring training to 22 players.
The list includes 12 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and two outfielders.
"There's always somebody that could very well sneak onto the roster, especially if you have an injury or two in spring training, or if a couple guys aren't ready, or a couple guys coming off surgery," Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper explained on KNBR 680-AM Tuesday morning. "But also, it's a really good way for the Major League coaching staff to see what these guys look like in uniform. See how they move. Walk through the clubhouse, see what their personality is like because a good number of those guys are eventually going to be in the big leagues. So it's an opportunity for the organization to see these guys in a Major League environment."
Kyle Crick, the team's first round (49th overall) pick in 2011, went 6-7 with a 3.80 ERA over 23 appearances (22 starts) for Double-A Richmond last season. The 21-year old struck out 111 batters and issued 61 walks in 90 innings of work.
Chris Stratton, the team's first round (20th overall) pick in 2012, went 7-8 with a 5.09 ERA over 19 appearances (18 starts) at Single-A San Jose last season. He also went 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA over five starts for Double-A Richmond. Stratton is 24 years old.
Ty Blach, a 2012 fifth round pick, went 8-8 with a 3.13 ERA over 25 starts in Double-A in 2014. The 24-year old lefty struck out 91 in 141 innings.
Clayton Blackburn, a 16th round selection in 2011, started 18 games for Richmond last year, registering a 5-6 record to go along with a 3.29 ERA.
"Well all those guys, when you talk about the pitchers, they've all had good years in the minor leagues," Kuiper said. "It's not a fluke that those guys are there. And there's a good group there that the Giants are expecting to eventually take over, you know, the Cain spots on the roster, the Linceum spots, this is the last year for Hudson, Vogelsong signed a one-year deal.
"So eventually you have to have some of these younger guys start coming in and take those spots. And it's gonna happen a lot quicker than we think because you have one of the older rotations in baseball right now and you need those young guys to start showing some signs that they are gonna take these spots. So I'm interested in seeing them all..."
