Marco Scutaro underwent surgery on his troubled back in Miami on Sunday, GM Brian Sabean revealed on a conference call Monday afternoon.
Dr. Michael Wang performed the operation and fused L2 and L3 in Scutaro's back.
The procedure carries an estimated recovery time of four to six months before Scutaro can consider baseball activities.
The 13-year MLB veteran is currently resting at home and will begin his rehab soon.
Scutaro, who has been dealing with a bad back for years, appeared in five games for the Giants last season, collecting one hit in 11 at-bats.
The 39-year-old is entering the final year of his three-year, $20 million contract with the Giants, and his San Francisco career is in jeopardy.
