The Giants placed Jake Peavy on the 15-day DL with a lower back strain, the team announced Saturday. In a corresponding move, Albert Suarez will make the move back to San Francisco after being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Peavy was scheduled to start Saturday night against the Braves. Suarez will now start on the hill in place of the veteran.
The move to put Peavy on the 15-day DL is retroactive to August 21.
Peavy entered the season as a starter for the Giants, but has since moved to the bullpen after the team's trade for Matt Moore. In 29 appearances, 21 as a starter, Peavy is 5-9 with a 5.55 ERA.
Suarez has bounced between the Giants and Triple-A, both in a starting and relieving role. The 26-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.20 ERA in the bigs this year. He has started in six of his 16 games.
The Giants (70-58) are one game behind the Dodgers (71-57) in the NL West standings.
