OAKLAND -- The Giants officially put Joe Panik on the 7-day concussion disabled list, calling up veteran Ruben Tejada to add infield depth.
Tejada, who signed a minor league deal earlier this month, was thrown right into the fire. He's starting Wednesday against the A's.
Panik was a late scratch Tuesday. He is feeling concussion symptoms related to a pitch that hit him in the head 11 days ago in Tampa Bay.
The Giants found a creative way to open up a 40-man roster spot. Chris Heston was recalled and placed on the 60-day DL with an oblique strain. Heston hurt himself while taking a swing in his last Triple-A start.
Tejada, 26, played in 23 games for the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this season. He hit .176 (6-for-34) with two doubles and three RBI. Prior to joining St. Louis, Tejada spent the previous six seasons with the New York Mets, where he hit .255 in 580 games.
