SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants started the year with no players on the disabled list, but this being baseball, it was only a matter of time before Bruce Bochy started giving daily injury updates.
Here's what we've got at the start of a homestand ...
Hunter Pence is out today with minor back tightness. Bochy said Pence could have played today but he was going to give him a rest day soon anyway, so it became today. Pence is expected back in the starting lineup tomorrow.
Joe Panik is out today with groin tightness. Panik ran the bases in the afternoon and then took BP, and he said he's feeling much better. Bochy thinks Panik may be in the lineup as soon as tomorrow. Panik can pinch-hit tonight, and he no longer needs a pinch-runner.
Angel Pagan is out today with a strained hamstring. Pagan "is unlikely to play this series," Bochy said, although he later left the door open for Pagan to possibly return Sunday. Pagan isn't yet doing on-field work.
George Kontos (flexor strain) will face hitters tomorrow and then join Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. While Kontos said he feels great and wants to return after one rehab outing, Bochy said Kontos will need to "check off a few boxes." That means he'll have to go back-to-back games once and pitch two innings at least once. You're probably looking at about a week before he returns. Sergio Romo (flexor strain) is still three to four weeks away, but he'll take a big step Monday when he throws off a mound.
Those are your injury updates for the day. Adjust your fantasy lineups accordingly.
--- Tim Flannery was the eighth guest on my podcast. You can listen to it here. We talked about Peavy's struggles, Lincecum's showcase, his best and worst baserunners (the Pablo section is very good), postseason turning points, and much more. If you prefer downloading on your phone, it's on iTunes already.
--- Santiago Casilla's brother, Jose, has been promoted to Triple-A. The younger Casilla had posted a 1.42 ERA for Richmond. "My son went up to Triple-A and I know how he feels," Bochy said of Santiago. "It's his brother, and he's excited, and (Jose) is knocking on the door now."
