LOS ANGELES -- Already playing without their starting right fielder, the Giants lost their starting left fielder one inning into Saturday's game.
Nori Aoki was hit on the right foot in the top of the first inning and didn't come out to play defense in the bottom of the inning. He was diagnosed with a lower leg contusion, which is good news, all things considered. It's unlikely Aoki plays Sunday with an off day coming on Monday, but he appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Aoki stayed down for a while after getting plunked by the 94 mph Carlos Frias fastball while leading off the game. He eventually took his place at first and then hobbled to third when Joe Panik followed with a double to right. Aoki limped home when Angel Pagan flied out to deep center, and he was mobbed in the dugout by appreciative teammates.
Justin Maxwell came out to play right field in the bottom of the first, with Gregor Blanco shifting to left. Blanco was starting for the injured Hunter Pence, and the Giants expect to be without Pence for at least a couple more weeks.
Aoki is hitting .317 in his first season with the Giants and has been a revelation as the leadoff hitter.
