The Giants announced Tuesday that they have designated former first round pick Gary Brown for assignment to make room for Justin Maxwell on the 40-man roster.
Brown was the 24th overall pick out of Cal State Fullerton in the 2010 MLB Draft.
The Giants have 10 days to trade or waive Brown. If he clears waivers, the Giants have the ability to keep him in the organization by outrighting him to Triple-A Sacramento.
In five seasons in the minor leagues, Brown hit a collective .277 with a .342 on-base percentage, 120 doubles, 44 home runs and 227 RBI.
Last season with Triple-A Fresno, Brown hit .271 with 10 home runs and 53 RBI in 136 games.
Brown was a September call-up last season and appeared in seven games for the Giants. He collected three hits in seven at-bats.
Maxwell, a six-year veteran, earned a bench spot with the Giants after hitting .349 with two home runs and 14 RBI this spring.
He played with the Royals in 2014.
