SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jacob Turner’s first pitch in the bottom of the first inning Thursday ricocheted off home plate umpire Dale Scott, leading the Giants and Cubs to play half an inning with an umpire formation that looked straight out of Little League.
When Scott, who appeared to injure his right hand, went back to the trainer’s room, umpire Mark Ripperger ran off the field to change into protective gear.
Because it’s March 5 and none of these games matter, the umpires decided not to hold the game up as Ripperger changed.
Jim Joyce called balls and strikes from behind the mound, with Ron Kulpa staying at his position behind first base.
As strange as it was to watch, nothing odd happened during the bottom of the first. Ripperger came out for the top of the second — with his gear on — and took Scott’s place behind the plate.
