SAN FRANCISCO -- Matt Duffy came to camp in February and said he just wanted to force management to make a hard decision. He ended up making the team.
Duffy and Joaquin Arias won the two backup infield spots when the Giants finalized their roster Sunday, with Ehire Adrianza -- who is out of options -- getting designated for assignment.
In his first big league camp, Duffy, 24, hit .361 with a .400 on-base percentage and .639 slugging. He had three homers and played at second, short and third while also taking fly balls in left field in hopes of adding some versatility. As he waited for the news this week, Duffy said he was at peace because he had done all he could do to try and win a spot. The coaching staff agreed.
"I don't know what else he can do," manager Bruce Bochy said of Duffy on Thursday.
The Giants ended up keeping 13 pitchers, including both George Kontos and Jean Machi. They kept two catchers, with Hector Sanchez winning the backup job late in camp. Four outfielders are on the roster, and Duffy and Brandon Belt have both taken fly balls in recent days to help with that situation. Also Sunday, the Giants officially placed Hunter Pence (fractured forearm), Travis Ishikawa (lower back strain) and Erik Cordier (right forearm strain) on the disabled list.
