Starting pitching report

Ryan Vogelsong came in having allowed just six runs over 20 spring innings, but he found trouble in the early going Saturday. His first three batters of the game singled, giving the A’s an early lead. In the third, he learned a lesson that teammate Tim Lincecum knows all too well –- don’t hang a pitch to Yoenis Cespedes. The A’s slugger drilled a three-run homer on a change-up left out over the plate. Vogelsong gave up four runs and six hits over five innings, and as he admitted, he left himself plenty to work on for his first regular season start next Saturday at home against St. Louis.

Bullpen report

Jose Mijares, Jake Dunning and Heath Hembree delivered three scoreless innings in relief of Vogelsong.

At the plate

It was a quiet day against A’s starter Dan Straily. The only noise the Giants made offensively came courtesy of catcher Guillermo Quiroz, who hit a three-run homer off Bartolo Colon to pull the Giants within a run in the seventh.

In the field

Nothing in particular stood out except for an errant glove flip by second baseman Joe Panik on a potential double-play ball that resulted in an error.

A crowd of 30,266 showed up to O.co Coliseum for the final exhibition for both teams.

Up next

The Giants get an early glimpse of what should prove their toughest competition in the N.L. West, opening the season with a three-game road series against the Dodgers. Matt Cain makes his first Opening Day start Monday, opposing Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
