SAN DIEGO – Buster Posey ripped the nail on his right ring finger in the sixth inning Tuesday night, but didn’t rule himself out to return to the lineup as the Giants try to avoid a sweep Wednesday at Petco Park.
Madison Bumgarner bounced a pitch in the sixth inning that took an unexpected hop and hit Posey’s bare hand. The catcher said he thought it hit the lip of the plate.
Posey stayed in the game but was due up fourth in the seventh.
“I didn’t really even try to grip the bat,” said Posey, who estimated half the nail separated from the nail bed.
Hector Sanchez pinch-hit for him and struck out as the Giants stranded Angel Pagan’s leadoff triple. Sanchez also tapped out to the mound with the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, ending a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he’d check on Posey Wednesday morning.
“He did a pretty good job on it,” Bochy said. “We’ll see how he’s doing tomorrow."
Posey was just starting to turn a corner after a mostly sluggish second half in which he’s hit just one home run. He was 2 for 3 and has a .412 average over his last nine games, although his streak without a homer is now at 129 at-bats since his last one July 20.
