SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Mark Trumbo had a two-run single and Chase Anderson took a step toward securing a spot in Arizona's rotation as the Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 in game between split squads Saturday night.
Anderson scattered six hits and allowed a two-run homer to Brandon Belt in four innings, the longest stint by a Diamondbacks' starter this spring.
"I was very pleased," Anderson said.
After he allowed the homer to Belt, who also had a triple, manager Chip Hale said Anderson "pounded the zone" instead of picking at corners.
"That's a good sign," Hale said.
The Diamondbacks scored three runs in the third, helped by a throwing error by Giants third baseman Adam Duvall. Trumbo had a two-run single and Chris Owings added a run-scoring hit. The game was the spring debut for Owings, who had shoulder surgery in October.
"It went well," said Owings, who will be the D-Backs' starting shortstop. "I got some plays in the field and turned a double play."
Paul Goldschmidt singled and drew a walk and Aaron Blair threw three shutout innings in relief for the Diamondbacks.
STARTING TIME
Giants: Ryan Vogelsong allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in 2 2-3 innings. He walked one and struck out one. "I threw a couple of bad breaking balls," Vogelsong said. Otherwise, he indicated he is happy where he's at.
Diamondbacks: Anderson, who went 9-7 with a 4.01 ERA as a rookie last year, is competing for a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation. "I made one bad pitch; that was about it," Anderson said of the high changeup to Belt. "Other than that, my fastball command was good. "I felt really good."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Giants: Reliever Sergio Romo is supposed to pitch for the first time in a Cactus League game Sunday. He has been bothered by a sore shoulder.
Diamondbacks: Reliever Brad Ziegler threw on a practice field to hitters Saturday and fielded as part of his comeback from microfracture knee surgery in September. The Diamondbacks hope he'll be ready for opening day.
DOG DAYS OF MARCH
Speaking in between the Diamondbacks' two split-squad games Saturday, Hale expressed concern about the team's recent slide, particularly three straight subpar performances by starting pitchers.
"It's the middle of spring training. It's not fun. It's hot. Innings are long. We got time. There are plenty of guys competing for these spots. You'd like to see guys step forward, and some guys will. We need five."

Giants: Tim Hudson will pitch against the Diamondbacks at Sunday at Scottsdale Stadium.
Diamondbacks: Archie Bradley will start at San Francisco Sunday. "We want to see Archie in prime-time game," Hale said of the highly touted prospect. "It will be fun."
RECORD CROWDS
The sellout crowd of 13,032 for the night game was a record for Salt River Fields. Arizona hosted Seattle earlier Saturday. The combined 25,996 for the two games also was a record.
