Jake Peavy's best start of the season led to a Giants win, and helped clinch a landmark day for one of their relievers. When Peavy went deep in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Braves, he guaranteed a Wednesday spot start for Albert Suarez.
Suarez, 26, will start in place of Matt Cain, who is on the disabled list with a hamstring strain. Manager Bruce Bochy had waited to make the assignment official because Suarez might have been needed out of the bullpen, but he ended up having a light week.
Called up in early May as bullpen depth, Suarez has been a bit of a revelation. He has allowed just three runs and 10 hits in 12 innings, showing a sneaky fastball and ability to hit spots.
Suarez made his first MLB appearance on May 8 and got his first win May 11. He reached the majors after nine seasons and 103 starts in the minor leagues.
