SANTA CLARA -- San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs has been suspended for the first game of the regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, the NFL announced Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear how Dobbs violated league policy.

“The San Francisco 49ers organization supports the NFL’s code of conduct policy and their recent decision regarding Demarcus," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.

Dobbs will remain eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.

Dobbs was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and
possession of marijuana after he crashed his car at 3:45 a.m., on Nov. 30, his 25th birthday. He did not make the trip that week to St. Louis that week.
