Two days after scoring the first international goal of his career during a 6-0 rout of Guatemala, the San Jose Earthquakes' Chris Wondolowski was named to the 2013 MLS All-Star Game's Fan XI.
This is Wondowski's third nomination in a row after All-Star nominations in 2011 and 2012. The Danville, CA native is coming off a career year in 2012 after tying Roy Lassiter's single-season goals record with 27 goals.
Roughly midway through the 2013 season, Wondolowski leads the Earthquakes with five goals and is second on the team with three assists. Three of his goals have been game-winners.
Wondowski is currently training with the U.S. Men's National Team for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The All-Star Fan XI were all chosen by fan balloting through MLSsoccer.com, text message, and Twitter. Other players selected through the fan balloting are Raul Fernández (GK- FC Dallas), Matt Besler (D- Sporting Kansas City), Aurélien Collin (D- Sporting Kansas City), Omar Gonzalez (D- LA Galaxy), Brad Davis (M- Houston Dynamo), Will Johnson (M- Portland Timbers), Mike Magee (M- Chicago Fire), Graham Zusi (M- Sporting Kansas City), Thierry Henry (F- New York Red Bulls).
An 11th player, a forward, will be chosen from the AT&T MLS All-Star ‘In the Game’ Challenge and announced on July 11th.
These are only the first ten nominations out of 32. The All-Star Fan XI nomination does not guarantee a spot on the in-game roster of 18. The roster will be decided instead by MLS All-Star coach Peter Vermes who will consider player abilities and availability.
The roster will be announced on July 15th. The 2013 MLS All-Star Game will take place at Sporting Park, Kansas City on Wednesday July 31 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time where the MLS All-Star Team will take on Italy's AS Roma.
