Raiders waive LB Goethel, DB Francies

The Raiders waived linebacker Travis Goethel and cornerback Coye Francies on Tuesday afternoon. The transactions give the team a pair of roster spots under the 90-man early training-camp limit.

Francies’ release came with a “failure to disclose physical condition” designation, an odd, rarely used classification.

Goethel’s departure was more predictable. The Arizona State alum fell victim to injuries throughout his career, most recently with knee ligament tears that ended his 2012 season. He played eight games in 2010 and the same total in 2012, totaling seven tackles in that span.

He’s best known for an unfortunate predicament in last season’s opener, when he struggled after stepping in for injured long snapper Jon Condo.

Francies played 15 games for the Raiders last season as a defensive back and a kick returner. His largest impact came in the special teams, where he averaged 23.8 yards per return.
