The Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday announced the hiring of Tom Gamble, the 49ers' director of player personnel since 2011, to serve as vice president of player personnel. The 49ers granted the Eagles permission to interview Gamble last year after the draft.

"Since Ryan Grigson left to become the general manager of the Colts, we've been looking for the right person to fill his spot and we are excited about what Tom can bring to the team," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement.

"He's not only a talented evaluator, but also a good man and the type of person you want as a part of your team. Tom and I have had a great relationship over the years and I know he's excited to come home. He had a great run in San Francisco and they have been very successful over the last few years. He will jump right in with our group and get working on free agency and the draft."

Gamble leaves the 49ers and joins the Eagles just a week before the start of the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Gamble spent the past eight seasons with the 49ers, first as pro personnel director under Scot McCloughan. Gamble was promoted to director of player personnel in 2011. Gamble has worked closely with general manager Trent Baalke the past two seasons, overseeing the college and pro personnel departments.

"I would like to thank Tom for his hard work, dedication and loyalty over the past eight seasons," Baalke said in a statement.

"He has played an instrumental role within our personnel department, and is a true professional in every sense of the word. As a friend, I will always appreciate the relationship we have, and wish him and his family all the best."

Gamble had a hand in building a 49ers roster that sent an NFL-high nine players to the Pro Bowl. The 49ers were 11-4-1 this season and are the No. 2 seed in the NFL playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Gamble originally entered the NFL as an assistant in the Eagles' player personnel department in 1988. He remained with the Eagles through 1994, rising to the level of director of pro scouting. Previously, he served as a college scouting administrator, area scout and contract negotiator.

Gamble's father, Harry, served as Eagles president and general manager for a decade, beginning in 1985.

It's not immediately known how the 49ers plan to fill the vacancy. Joel Patten, director of college scouting, is the highest-ranking member of the personnel department behind Baalke.
