49ers depth chart: Wide receiver still wide open

After eight full-squad practices of training camp, nobody is closer to winning the starting job for the 49ers at split end.

The 49ers have devoted 14 roster spots to wide receivers. But seven of those players did not practice fully on Friday. Two others, Lavelle Hawkins and Austin Collie, received about a dozen practice snaps apiece just hours after the 49ers signed them to one-year contracts.

The 49ers released a depth chart Friday night that lists Anquan Boldin and Kyle Williams as the starting wide receivers. That makes sense, but Williams has taken part in just one full-squad practice. He might return to practice Sunday from a hamstring strain.

Coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday he expects to get some of his receivers back on the practice field Sunday, including A.J. Jenkins, who has also missed time with a hamstring strain. Jenkins, the 49ers' first-round pick in 2012, is under more pressure to perform with the additions of Hawkins and Collie, both of whom have extensive NFL experience as slot receivers.

There are two starting jobs up for grabs on defense. Nose tackle Ian Williams has gotten off to a good start in training camp. He is competing against Glenn Dorsey, who has come on strong in recent days.

At free safety, rookie Eric Reid appears to be coming along nicely in his quest to win the starting job against C.J. Spillman and Craig Dahl.

Of course, the other major competition is taking place to fill the void of the season-ending injury to third cornerback Chris Culliver.

The 49ers do not practice on Saturday. They return to the practice field Sunday morning, and will have four practices before opening the exhibition season Thursday against the Denver Broncos at Candlestick Park.
