Keep an eye on…

Sharks: Raffi Torres. The winger is proving to be an ideal pickup at the trade deadline, and after scoring his second goal with the Sharks on Tuesday, has two goals and four assists for six points in his first nine games with his new team. He’s brought a physical element, too, with 37 hits over that span.

Coyotes: Mike Smith. The Sharks have avoided seeing the goaltender in three of the four games in the season series, but he recorded a shutout against the Sharks on Feb. 9 in a 1-0 shootout win. Smith shut out the Sharks three times last season, too, and has a 2.10 goals-against average and .942 save percentage in 11 career games against San Jose (6-3-1).

Last game

Sharks: Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture scored in the third period to give the Sharks a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Dallas Stars at home on Tuesday. Raffi Torres added a goal on the power play in the first period, and goaltender Antti Niemi made 24 saves as San Jose clinched a playoff spot for the ninth straight season.

Coyotes: Jimmy Howard stopped all 34 shots he faced in blanking the Coyotes at Joe Louis Arena on Monday, 4-0. Johan Franzen had two goals and Henrik Zetterberg collected three assists. Mike Smith made 19 saves in the loss, in which the Red Wings scored three power play goals. Phoenix has lost four of five (1-2-2).

Sharks: Jason Demers (left ankle sprain) is out.

Coyotes: Derek Morris (lower body) and Rob Klinkhammer (concussion) are out.

Season series

The Sharks have won three of four games in the season series against the Coyotes, including the most recent matchup at Jobing.com Arena on April 15, 4-0. San Jose’s only loss came in a shootout on Feb. 9, 1-0.

Joe Pavelski (2g, 4a) and Joe Thornton (1g, 5a) lead the Sharks in scoring against Phoenix with six points, while Patrick Marleau has two goals and three assists for five points. Antti Niemi has played all four games and is 3-0-1 with a 1.20 goals-against average and .958 save percentage.

“Of course, that’s an honor for me. I don’t really want to think about that too much, but it tells that I’ve had a pretty good year.” – Antti Niemi, on winning the team’s Player of the Year award
